The Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments (NWNMCOG) is working to make Exit 53 safer and more efficient for everyone who uses it - from local residents to truckers moving goods across our state. NWNMCOG has partnered with local consulting firm, Wilson & Company, Inc. to initiate a study in the area to help identify areas of improvement for Exit 53.

Study Background
In cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the New Mexico Department of Transportation completed a corridor study of I-40 extending from the New Mexico/Arizona border to Albuquerque, New Mexico (2024).
As a result of this study, the Thoreau and I-40 interchange (Exit 53) has been identified as an area in need of safety and traffic flow improvement.
To begin evaluating transportation needs in this area, the Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments (NWNMCOG) has initiated the I-40 Prewitt Interchange Reconstruction Project.
